Salvation Army Major Jimmy Bovender spoke during the service and talked to reporters in a brief press conference at the church. Bovender is Cindy Wise’s father.“My daughter feels it best to stay here at this time to continue the ministry,” Bovender said. “As a father, I question that, but yet I know God’s grace is sufficient and He will be there to direct her and give her the strength.”

I think it is safe to assume that Cindy Bovender (who grew up to be Major Cindy Wise, widow of martyr Major Philip Wise) was dedicated to God as an infant. But it is perhaps only now that her parents come to realize what that truly means -- to give our children to God. I ask the Lord to help us all to carry out the vows we have made. Direct us, and give us the strength.

I'm also reminded of these words from our Founder, William Booth:
"Does the surging sea look dark and dangerous? Unquestionably it is so. There is no doubt that the leap for you, as for everyone who takes it, means difficulty and scorn and suffering. For you it may mean more than this. It may mean death. He who beckons you from the sea however, knows what it will mean – and knowing, He still calls to you and bids to you to come."

A memorial service and public viewing for Major Philip Wise will be held at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, December 29 at the First Assembly of God in North Little Rock, 4501 Burrow Drive.
Major Wise was a warm and thoughtful man. He loved God, and he loved his family. He also loved the children in the community where he served.
Major Philip Wise was suddenly and tragically taken from us on Christmas Eve, and he is deeply missed.

While Evelyn and Elizabeth read the scripture in English, it was projected in the screen in Russian.

It was lightly raining out as participants lit candles in the fountain park.

The candles were in the shape of a red ribbon, as a reminder of those living with HIV and AIDS, and those who have died.

This past week, the Narva Corps had a week of music instruction while the young people were on school holiday. For four hours each day, the young people learned brass instruments, vocal, guitar and dance. Here, Cadet Aleksei Burunov gives some pointers to Nikolai.

Here's some more pictures from the big youth weekend. The Estonian young people did the "Chair" drama for the auxiliary group on Saturday and during the worship meeting on Sunday.

Anneli, Eero, Kirill and Elizabeth do their parts in the drama.

The Estonian praise band also played on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

Here is the band in action, with singers Rebeka, Anneli, Elizabeth and Sonia, Eero on guitar, Tim on bass and Evelin on piano.

On Saturday, the stage was set up for the Finnish rock band Park7, so the praise band got to enjoy some cool lighting as they sang.

After the devotional on Saturday evening, the band was asked to play again to encourage everyone focus on Jesus.

At the end of the Sunday meeting, the young people came onstage to wave red, yellow and blue flags. The Estonians like Anneli, Eero and Kirill outshined the Finns (if we can be so humble!).

Natasha found a new young friend (of course!) as she waved her flag!

Helsinki Youth Weekend

Our corps young people spent the weekend in Helsinki for a territorial youth event. There were nine of us from Narva, and we travelled on the ferry with the six from Tallinn. During the trip, Anneli sang karaoke, which the aging fins seemed to really enjoy!

The first program of the weekend was a fun night of games, led by Michael. Here Sonia and Keit try to untangle themselves from a human knot.

Two weeks ago, our youth group spent the afternoon in Narva-Jõesuu, on the Gulf of Finland.

It was windy and the waves were really coming in!

We had the chance to appreciate some fine art (I think that's what it's supposed to be).

They are long overdue, but here are some pictures from the Clark's welcome meeting at the Narva Corps. The meeting featured the debut of the Narva Corps band.

Many soldiers and friends came out for the meeting.

Cadet Aleksei Burunov and Captain Julia Burunova led the worship time in the meeting.

It was also a special time because an Army friend from the St. Petersburg, Russia, Corps donated a hot water pot to the Narva Corps. Aleksei explained about the gift, and we offered a prayer of dedication.

She then led the installation ceremony. It was one of her last official acts before going to Denmark as that territory's chief secretary.

As an act of commitment, the Clarks knelt at the altar as others prayed for God's blessing on them.

Following the installation, Colonel Muikku presented flowers to Evelyn.

It isn't just retiring [officers] that cause things to get shuffled around. Must be that time of year.... My mother's beloved pastor, who has been there forever and knows every single person in his [corps] and every single thing about them, just left last week having been transferred. I know another [officer] who was just moved.

Any of us could get our marching orders any day. That's our job.

It's a shame that people can't get their brains around why these changes take place in the first place. Oh sure, it's true that in this case the [officer] has retired. But [officers] are moved around all the time for a lot of reasons. Your new [officer] has caused a domino effect. Wherever he came from, he has to be replaced.

But more importantly we must remember our [covenant]. Our job is to become completely attached with Christian love to our [people]. Our job is also to leave and give that same unequivocal love and attention to the strangers that will become our [people].

We love everyone. We are attached to no one. Our relationship to you comes only through God, as we are all his children.

Making Missionary Prayer a Habit

Your prayers sustain missionaries.
One practical way to approach praying for your missionaries is to devote each day of the week to a specific area of their lives. Aim for six days a week. If you manage seven, you’ll feel the satisfaction of going beyond your goal.

• Monday: Inner life and growth. For spiritual disciplines. For confidence in God’s sovereignty when things go wrong. For God’s mighty touch in relieving stress.
• Tuesday: Relationships. With their partner and children, with coworkers, with unbelievers, and with authorities in the country.
• Wednesday: Special needs in a foreign culture. Mastering the language. Defense against loneliness, homesickness, frustration. Insights into how to communicate the truth. God’s sovereign working in government decisions and politics.
• Thursday: Ministry. For Christ to be manifested through their lives day by day. For God to empower them for their work. For His blessing on their evangelism, discipling, and church responsibilities. For their specific area of service.
• Friday: The nitty-gritty. Physical health. Financial provision. Coping with red tape. Wise use of time. For strength and faith in trials. That they will take adequate time for exercise, relaxation, sports, hobbies, vacation.
• Saturday: Victory. Against Satan as he seeks to keep people blinded to the gospel and thwart the growth of believers.

Praying for missions is not a fringe activity from God’s point of view. By praying you can play a major role in God’s great purposes. Prayer gives you the opportunity to make a vast difference in this world. Your prayers are vital.

Major Alan Harley gives eight principles for Salvationists.
The first four come from the reformation (16thC):
Salvation is provided by grace alone;
Salvation is received by faith alone;
Salvation is experienced in Christ alone;
Salvation is taught in Scripture alone.
And in these four we agree with our evangelical comrades of various stripes.
Those are points of unity.
The other four emerge from the 18thC and Wesley:
All people need to be saved;
All people can be saved;
All people saved can know they are saved;
All people who are saved can go on to Christian holiness.
These last four do distinguish us from other evangelicals.
But they remain truths to savour and spread.

Being discontented prevents one from doing what pleases God.
